Description
Dyes and pigments are used as colouring components in many industries including pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and clothing, among others. Natural colourants are desired as they may be biodegradable, less harmful and less carcinogenic. Blue colourants are particularly rare and therefore, desirable.
Researchers at University of Costa Rica have identified a rare natural blue pigment and method of manufacture from a native plant from the Justicieae a tribe within the Acanthaceae family, with the highest diversity found in South America, particularly in the Neotropical region. The tribe is known for its diverse and complex genus Justicia, which is widely distributed in South America.
